EXAMPLE 1

1. My concentration revolves around the theme of isolation and alienation in the modern world using the subway as my context. I was intrigued by the downcast and exhausted body language and expressions of commuters in transit. I found the subway particularly evocative because, despite the suffocating proximity and unusually closeness of the other commuters, each person was intently contemplating their own lives, completely unaware that everyone else was consumed by the same personal reflection.

 2. The concept behind my concentration was always about the isolation of people in modern society but my pieces evolved from simply observing commuters to making the viewer become a part of the scene. In #’s 1-3 there is a definite separation between the viewer and the piece but by #12 the viewer feels as if they are on the subway, being tilted and pushed into the mass of humanity around them. In #4 I reached a turning point in my work because the viewer was invited to become another passenger on the subway. I began adding cut paper and elevating my focal points form the paper in #5 to further show the chaotic atmosphere of the subway. In preparation for each drawing I began taking pictures undetected on the subway that often turned out at strange and tilted angles. I began to employ this tilted perspective in the background of #6 to further emphasize the jostling of the subway. Having established the crowed feeling I began to use the harsh florescent lighting of the subway to emphasize the focal point in each piece. I began exaggerating the contrast on the clothes and especially the faces of my subjects in #10 to illustrate the downcast and pensive expressions of someone caught up in their own thoughts. In addition, I drew on paper bags to show the leathery and alienated faces of commuters in a working community. I made the subway out of tracing paper because it captured the boldness of the black and white charcoal, which created the uninviting and cold surface of the subway walls. In the same piece I began to vary the distance of my subjects from the viewer, intensifying the allusion that the viewer was a commuter on the train as well. In #12 I further increased the contrast of the piece so that the majority of the commuters were hidden in the dark underbelly of the subway while my focal point was bathed in the alienating glow of the lights above, isolating him from the surrounding people.
EXAMPLE 2

1. My concentration is focused around combining and collaging hands to make another world. I am fascinated in fantasy worlds and fictional settings, but to me there is a stark difference between the real world and an impossible world. Since hands are a symbol of connection and an instrument for our interaction with anything, I use hands to link both worlds together. I want to create a world stuck between reality and fantasy so I kept elements familiar to us combined with the strangeness of hands.

2. In the past, photography was created and known for capturing reality and everyday life. In my images, I want to move away from that traditional viewpoint by constructing a whole new world made out of hands. I started to explore ways of showing snapshots of this different world by creating animals, like the elephant (image 1), or environments, like the girl sitting on the bench (image 3), and develop the idea of this other place in my mind. I wanted to keep some parts of this world familiar to give my world a sense that it could be real, so I have included scenery like clouds or water and other transformed objects. In images 2-5 and 7, I used a combination of clouds and vast expanses of water or fog to include natural settings that could be found in both worlds. In images 9,6,11, and 8 I have transformed a furniture set, a tunnel, a flower, and an entire room into their hand components that are still recognizable as the originals. I want my images to appear realistic enough that people look at what I have created and be able to see themselves standing in the image, so these images are inspired by scenes that could be real, and then I filter them into my new world as hand creations.

1.  Out of your 15 images, which ones are your strongest?  Why?
2.  When you examine your weaker images, what common patterns do you see that make them not as strong?
3.  Describe your process through creating this project.  Were you faithful to creating every day or did it come in waves?  Why do you think it happened this way?
4.  What grade would you give yourself and why?  Look at the criteria below.

A level work: Student challenged themselves to try new things, created 15+ images, process was continual (not created at the last minute), images are creative and well executed

B level work: Student challenged themselves to get the project done, process was somewhat uneven, images are of a good quality, but maybe slightly stereotypical

C level work: Student got the project done, but the process and the finished images are uneven, images do not present unique viewpoints or ideas

december 4 - 8

Goal: Students will finish their 31 nights project by organizing their work, editing their images, and refining their final product.

NOvember 28 - December 1

Goal: Students will continue to develop their 31 nights project by organizing their work, editing their images, and planning for the next steps.

1. Start organizing your 31 nights images on your website.  See my (unfinished) example on my webpage.

Make a separate page for this!  I used a numbered slideshow, put the images in order,  and captioned each image separately. (Note that I only have a few self portraits - I am not a fan of photographing myself, but I am trying to do a few to stretch my comfort level - so you should be brave too!).

2. Figure out what you have shot and what you still need to do.  As you can see from my prompt sheet (see right), I haven't been strictly linear on this process.

3. Did you turn in your mixed media image and reflection? (past due)

4. Scholastics is coming up.  Check out artandwriting.org to see the guidelines and categories.  You all could enter work into Digital Art, Photography, and (possibly) Mixed Media.  SENIORS can enter a portfolio of 8 works that are based off a single cohesive idea.

5.  Work on your Breadth folder - you need to have your work in a folder on your desktop AND in Google Classroom.

5.  Give your website some love - update your pages now so you don't have so much to do later.

David Leeson

The key to this project is consistency. You need to set a time of day and a specific amount of time that you will work on this project each day and then commit to keeping that schedule. For example Every night before bed at 9:00pm for 20 minutes. I recommend that you spend a minimum of 15 minutes.

3. You will draw/take photos each night at your set time for the amount of time you chose. You will do this five nights a week using the prompts  provided (see the tab to the left) until you have completed the 31 Nights.

4. Complete the prompts one at a time. Prompts can be interrupted in any way you choose but should align with the theme.

5. You will create a picture each night at your set time for the amount of time you chose. You will do this five nights a week using the prompts provided until you have completed the 31 Nights.

6. Complete the prompts one at a time, in order. Prompts can be interpreted in any way you choose but should align with the theme.  There will be time in class to use Photoshop and Illustrator to finish your ideas.

7. Hand in your completed photos at the end of each week on Classroom.

8. At the end of each week we'll discuss our progress on the project and offer support to classmates for the upcoming week.

YEARBOOK COVER DUE FRIDAY
“From around the age of six, I had the habit of sketching from life. I became an artist, and from fifty on began producing works that won some reputation, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention. At seventy-three, I began to grasp the structures of birds and beasts, insects and fish, and of the way plants grow. If I go on trying, I will surely understand them still better by the time I am eighty-six, so that by ninety I will have penetrated to their essential nature. At one hundred, I may well have a positively divine understanding of them, while at one hundred and thirty, forty, or more I will have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive. May Heaven, that grants long life, give me the chance to prove that this is no lie.” - Hokusai
