Serendipity - Due ?
Pop-up Magazine - DUE 1/17
Pop-Up Magazine–a live storytelling event that brings together writers, audio producers, photographers and filmmakers to tell original, reported stories on stage in theaters across the country–is working on a special collaboration with our partners at XQ, a passionate network of educators, students, families, and civic-minded citizens re-imagining high school education in the United States, on a special show themed around high school. We have a special opportunity for student photographers grades 9-12 and 2018 graduates. We’re looking for submissions for a photo essay showcasing what high schools look like through the eyes of the students who attend them. We’re looking for original images captured with the following prompts in mind, but would also consider photos taken in the last year if they fit around the following themes:
We’re looking for images of people, landscapes, and objects, and we’ll take photos in all formats: film, digital, iPhone, Polaroid, etc. Students should feel free to be creative in their interpretations. Photos should be submitted via our Google submission form (https://goo.gl/forms/Bx4NAOaibwXfKec13) by January 17, 2019. We may be following up with you for an interview. If selected, the photos will be featured on stage, with credit, at one or more of our shows in Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Tacoma, Denver, Colorado Springs, Memphis, Nashville, and Chicago. Students who are selected will also be invited to join us at a show in March 2019.
Please direct any questions to marin@popupmagazine.com. Thank you--we look forward to seeing your photos!
- Capture the communities that make your school unique. Maybe it’s your favorite club, or band, or sports team; maybe it’s the group you eat lunch with every day. It could even be a class that you particularly love.
- Who are the heroes in your school? It might be a teacher who goes above and beyond in the classroom, or a student who has faced challenges with bravery. It could be someone who is overlooked but essential to the school’s functioning. It could even be yourself (but we want to know why!)
- What’s in your bag/locker/lunch? What’s the most important or meaningful thing you carry each day? Or, give us a self-portrait, using three objects that are relevant to your high school experience.

NAtional Geographic Teen Photo Contest - Due 1/15
MCA TEEN SHOW
The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s Teen Program: Failure Lab invites teens currently enrolled in high school to submit 2D artwork for a juried exhibition at MCA Denver. This year’s exhibition is titled Still Loading... We encourage Denver-area teens to submit original artwork that responds to or expresses this subject.
Our lives are a series of cycles and rituals that anchor us and propel us forward. These patterns and habits can also trip us up, hold us still, or keep us looking backward. As teenagers in 2018, we are hyper-aware that we and the world around us are changing rapidly, every day. We find ourselves regularly taking stock of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going next. Application deadlines, tryouts and playoffs, midterms, and changing seasons push us forward, while nostalgic images from social media, television, and advertising pull us back. We are caught feeling as though we are running in place or standing still as the world rushes past us. We are looking for artwork that reflects on these ideas and more: the inevitability of time’s passage; the evolution of identity; the importance—and burden—of memories. Technology and social media reflect and refract these concepts, making it difficult to ignore them.
Send us work that addresses or explores Still Loading… as you understand it. You can only submit one piece, so send us your best. Submissions are accepted digitally (please attach a clear image to your submission form).
Artwork will be juried by Failure Lab, and artists selected for inclusion will be notified by Thursday, November 1. Accepted artwork must be dropped off at MCA Denver between November 1 and November 14.
Selected artwork will be displayed in the museum as part of a FREE exhibition opening event on Friday, November 30, 2018 from 6-9PM. Artwork will stay on display at the museum from November 30, 2018–January 6, 2019.
